After the discussion on the phone, I had some thoughts about some key questions for the group to ponder and this is what came to mind:
1. How to evaluate the influence of professional ethics on the leadership/role model qualities of police managers/supervisors?
2. How can we most effectively develop professional ethics in the police learner (education vs training)?
3. How does the understanding of organisational professional ethics influence work performance by police practitioners?
I have also included the titles of some articles I located for the New South Wales Police Force recruit training course and these are supplied to our police students. They come from US journals so should be relatively easy to locate. I recommend these articles as a good read.
1. McGrath, E. 1997 "Professional Ethics and Policing" in Contemporary Policing Issues and Personnel Trends" Butterworth-Heinneman, Newton, MA pp145-165
2. Tinsley P.N. & MacMillan, C.S. (2002) "Police Ethics Education: A Waste of Time?" in The Police Chief August pp92-97
3. Wirrer, R. (2006) "The Translation of Ethical Standards into Practice" in Police Research & Management Vol 6. No 3. pp 71-82
If anyone has trouble finding these, I have them on Pdf documents but there may be copywright issues about posting them on a website.
