The first call was held on Tuesday, March 6. Participants were: Susan Kyzer, FDLE
Steve Casey, FDLE
Dr. Jim Alexander, LEMIT
Doug Graves, Idaho POST
Dr. Bud Levin, PFI
Dr. Gene Stephens, SCCJA
Dr. Dorothy McCoy, SCCJA
Spears Westbrook, SCCJA
Melissa Munn, SCCJA
Kathy Black-Dennis, ACA (auditing)
Peter Cosgrove, NLECTC-SE (auditing)
A number of topics were addressed in keeping with the established call agenda (attached). Those are as follows:
1. The mission statement and goals defined at the Summit were reviewed and found to be appropriate (attached).
2. The decision was made that a written definition of membership and a membership application are needed. A subcommittee comprised of Gene Stephens, Jim Alexander and Steve Casey was formed to formulate the definition, application and review of any other membership related topics such as dues, etc. This subcommittee will report at the next conference call.
3. As to research and development, the committee agreed this is to be an important activity of the Consortium. After review it has been decided that the following (volunteer) organizations, SCCJA, FDLE, LEMIT and RCMP, will provide staff to conduct the first research project. This project will center on the compilation of a directory of leadership programs in the field of public safety, entities supporting leadership and a comparison of program structures and competencies addressed. Representatives will meet in Columbia at SCCJA in early May ’07 to initiate this research.
4. Kathy Black-Dennis invited the Consortium to be involved with the American Correctional Association meeting in January ’08. After discussion the Advisory Committee, acknowledging the kind invitation, thought the best intent of the Consortium would be served by having Dr. Jim Alexander attend the meeting on behalf of the Advisory Committee. The principle reasoning for declining the offer was that the Consortium needs to concentrate on solidifying its structure and activities prior to such involvement.
5. Susan Kyzer volunteered to prepare a ‘talking points’ paper that can be utilized by the Advisory Committee and Consortium members when communicating with individuals/organizations outside the Consortium.
6. The Committee wishes to have a conference call monthly and a call will be scheduled during April.
7. An agenda for the April call will be published and will include discussion concerning website, research project, 2008 Summit (which will be hosted by FDLE).
Please note that Susan Kyzer has resigned her position with FDLE to move to another agency. Susan will remain involved with the Consortium and Advisory Committee for the upcoming year. Steve Casey has been employed by FDLE to assume Susan’s duties and will be a Consortium member.
Steve Burge is retiring from Bramshill on March 31. We will forward his new contact information when we receive it. He will arrange communication which will allow him to remain on the Advisory Committee.
The Advisory Committee would like to thank Kathy Black-Dennis and Pete Cosgrove for their audit and interest in the Consortium
